EARLY

The leap to success: Dookie and Insomniac (1992 - 1996)
Billie Joe Armstrong in the Tour of American Idiot

  • Having sold 55,000 copies of Kerplunk, the group signed with Reprise Records (a subsidiary of Warner Bros) in April 1993, leaving Lookout! amicably. The year 1994 was an eventful year for Green Day in particular and punk in general. Their album Dookie has sold 14,000,000 copies convirtiédose one of the most successful alternative rock albums of the decade (only surpassed by Nirvana's Nevermind sold 15,000,000), being Lollapallooza openers, and the festival's most acclaimed Woodstock 1994, which led to a chaotic war of mud and the band had to flee by helicopter. They played to a benefit concert at Madison Square Garden where Billie Joe played the last song, "She", naked but covering her with his guitar. Also won a Grammy for best alternative interpretation by Dookie.

The three singles from the album ( "Longview," "Basket Case" and "When I Come Around") were overwhelmingly popular. His tour was a success. Within all this as a curiosity, Billie Joe and Tré married, and Mike got engaged. The latter two were divorced after. In 1995, another Green Day song hit number one, "JAR", which deals with the death of a friend of Mike.

The group's fourth album, Insomniac, was recorded in six weeks between July and August 1995 and was released in October of that year. This album was much less commercial than its predecessor, with less catchy songs, and, according to critics, it mimics the way that Kurt Cobain got rid of their fans false with 'In Utero'. Insomniac, though undoubtedly a great album, failed to match the success of Dookie, sold 5,000,000 copies in the U.S. and elsewhere. Insomniac's first single was "Geek Stink Breath", a topic that describes the effects caused by addiction to methamphetamine (known as "speed"). The b-side brought the songs "I Want To Be On TV" and "Do not Want To Fall In Love". Both issues are a joke, the last of them written by Tré. The second single, which reached number one, was "Brain Stew / Jaded", which deals with sleep problems caused in Billie Joe the birth of his son Joey. The B-side of this were "Do Da Da" and the original version of "Good Riddance", which brings no string section. The third and fourth singles were "Stuck With Me" and "Walking Contradiction". The first b-side brought two songs live. For the second not made a B-side

  • Post American Idiot (2006 - 2008)

In 2006, the band has released some singles with destiny beneficial, as the song a duet with U2, The Saints are Coming to collect funds for victims of Hurricane Katrina

In spring 2008, Billie confirmed that they were the mysterious band and they would release an album under that identity, the album was released in May, titled Stop, Drop and Roll! and made a small tour of his country.

Wake Me Up When September Ends and letter

  • letter of Wake Me Up When September End

Summer has come and passed
The innocent can never last
wake me up when september ends

like my fathers come to pass
seven years has gone so fast
wake me up when september ends

here comes the rain again
falling from the stars
drenched in my pain again
becoming who we are

as my memory rests
but never forgets what I lost
wake me up when september ends

summer has come and passed
the innocent can never last
wake me up when september ends

ring out the bells again
like we did when spring began
wake me up when september ends

here comes the rain again
falling from the stars
drenched in my pain again
becoming who we are

as my memory rests
but never forgets what I lost
wake me up when september ends

Summer has come and passed
The innocent can never last
wake me up when september ends

like my father's come to pass
twenty years has gone so fast
wake me up when september ends
wake me up when september ends

Don't wanna be an American idiot.
Don't want a nation that under the new media.

The subliminal mindfuck America.

Welcome to a new kind of tension.
All across the alien nation.
Everything isn't meant to be okay.
Television dreams of tomorrow.
We're not the ones who're meant to follow.
Convincing them to walk you.

Well maybe I'm the fuckhead America.
I'm not a part of a redneck agenda.
Now everybody do the propaganda.
And sing along in the age of paranoia.

Welcome to a new kind of tension.
All across the alien nation.
Everything isn't meant to be okay.
Television dreams of tomorrow.
We're not the ones who're meant to follow.

Holiday and letter

Hear the sound of the falling rain"
Coming down like an Armageddon flame (Hey!)
The shame
The ones who die without a name

"Hear the dogs howlin' out of key"
To a hymn called "Faith and Misery" (Hey!)
And bleed, the company lost the war today

I beg to dream and differ from the hollow lies
This is the dawning of the rest of our lives
On holiday

Hear the drum pounding out of time
Another protestor has crossed the line (Hey!)
To find, the money's on the other side

Can I get another Amen? (Amen!)
There's a flag wrapped around the score of men (Hey!)
A gag, A plastic bag on a monument

I beg to dream and differ from the hollow lies
This is the dawning of the rest of our lives
On holiday

"The representative from California has the floor"

Seek out to the president gas-bag
Bombs away is (your punishment)
Pulverize the Eiffel towers
Who criticized (your government)
Bang bang goes the broken glass man
Kill all the fags that (don't agree)
Trials by fire, setting fire
Is not a way that's meant for me
Just cause
Just cause
Because we're all Okay!

I beg to dream and differ from the hollow lies
This is the dawning of the rest of our lives
I beg to dream and differ from the hollow lies
This is the dawning of the rest of our lives

This is our lives on holiday...

SONGS BASKET CASE

  • letter of BASKET CASE

Do you have the time,
to listen to me whine about nothing and everything all at once,
i am one of those,
melaudramatic fools neurotic to the bone no doubt about it,
Chorus:
sometimes i give myself the creeps sometimes my mind plays tricks on me,
it all keeps adding up i think i'm cracking up,
am i just paranoid,
i'm just stoned.
I went to a shrink to analyze my dreams,
she says it's lack of sex that's bringing me down,
i went to a whore he said my life's a bore,
just quit my whining cause it's bringing her down,
Chorus
Grasping to control,
so i better hold on.
Chorus

SOURCES

Beginnings (1990 - 1992)

Tre Cool in 2004

The origins of the band date back to 1988] when Billie Joe and Mike, two boys of fifteen years of Rodeo met and became friends. Both shared a special fondness for the current punk groups at Berkeley that developed at that time (Mr. T Experience, Operation Ivy, Crimpshrine) and other punk groups of the late 80s as Husker Du and Social Distortion.

Influenced by such groups, decided to form their own pop punk band, originally called Sweet Children, with John Kiffmeyer (aka Al Sobrante, who had previously played in the band neighboring Isocracy) on drums in 1989. The group debuted at Rod's Hickory Pit restaurant (where he worked Billie Joe's mother) to about 30 friends. Later the group settled permanently in Berkeley, one of the epicenters of the current California punk .

In the same year they recorded their first EP with Skene! Records simply called Sweet Children. It contained three original songs: "Sweet Children", "Best Thing In Town" and "Strangeland" (where is, with its catchy chorus, which comes closest to cultivate the group style that later). The fourth song on the EP was a cover of the famous "My Generation" by The Who. In that year they recorded under the name Green Day 1,000 Hours EP, which was well received in the punk and hardcore scene in California.

In 1990, the band officially changed its name to Green Day (the name of a song written when they were still Sweet Children), and after a demonstration in the rain to Lawrence Livermore, they signed to their label, Lookout! Records. The Green Day's first album, 1,039 / Smoothed Out Slappy Hours was released that same year, collecting previous work (1,000 hours, 39 Smooth and Slappy). Shortly after its launch, Al Sobrante longer the battery to resume their studies at university. [7] was then recruited Tré Cool, a resident of the founder of Lookout! Larry Livermore and battery Lookouts, who remains the band's drummer until now. Armstrong and Dirnt and Cool knew of several concerts and was even Sweet Children. The day after graduation from high school John Swett (where Mike graduated, and Billie Joe was sent the day after turning 18) began a tour of the mobile library Tré's father to places like Atlanta, Los Angeles, New York and Canada.

The band's second album Kerplunk was launched on 17 January 1992 by Lookout!, His latest album with the band. The CD version included four tracks from the Sweet Children EP. This album is even softer and more accessible than before, with songs paused as "Christie Road" and "No One Knows". With Kerplunk group fame transcended the borders of California, making them very popular throughout the country. The album sold 500,000 copies, a figure very good for a punk group in an independent firm. and to make extra money on the band and that which is indispensable
